9 Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Based on scriptures, I Corinthians 12:8-10 there are 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The first gift to be discussed would be word of Wisdom which is God’s wisdom on a complicated situation or the best resolution for an issue. A word of wisdom given through the Holy Spirit to someone to relay to another at a crucial time (John 16:12-14). It can be the deciding factor on whether someone should move on a decision or not. The word of wisdom may be in reference to the timing of making a move or staying at rest and wait on God’s timing.

The second is the word of knowledge. This is the supernatural knowledge and insight given by the Holy Spirit (visions or dreams). This gift is normally given to those who take out time daily to seek God’s direction by praying, meditating on His word, and listening for God. Although various people experience visions or dreams, God will speak with those with this gift more often due to their reliance and openness to it (Matthew 16:17).

The third gift of the Holy Spirit is faith. Everyone has a certain measure of faith which is given through God’s grace. But there are those of us who have faith that tests beyond what others would believe. Peter had this faith (Matthew 14:22-33).When others are not as willing to step out, those with this gift will “push it to the limit.” They have faith in God no matter what is going on around them (Acts 7:55-56).

The gifts of healing is the fourth gift of the Holy Spirit. Those who have this gift are anointed to lay hands on others who are ill or afflicted of disease or disability and the healing power is manifested to heal the person or people. God still wants to heal today.

Miracles can be a gift given by the Holy Spirit. What is impossible for man is possible for God. Miracles can be seen even these days in medical and financial arenas. Miracles can only happen if there is some Divine intervention to an absolute impossible predicament.

The gift of Prophecy (2 Peter 1:2) (1 Corinthians 14:3-4) reveals God’s specific word given to a person or group of people to relay to an individual or a group. It would likely be a confirmation of a word that was spoken or revealed to the individual or group already. The confirmation seals it. It is a statement of what is going to occur in the near future or possibly even many months or even years from now.

Distinguishing between spirits is the ability to know that there are good and evil in this world and God gives them the ability to know the difference. The Holy Spirit reveals the true nature of someone or something whether it is good or bad (I John 4:1-6).

With the supernatural gift of speaking in tongues you are given a heavenly language that is not based on a native tongue. Romans 8:26 (NKJV) states, Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Speaking in tongues is a pattern of prayer directed by the Holy Spirit to God the Father on our behalf.

There is also a gift of interpretation of tongues. This person or people interpret the Spiritual language of tongues. You may also have both the gifts of speaking in tongues and interpreting where you can interpret what is being spoken. When an individual or people speak in tongues, there should be at least one individual who has been given the ability to interpret what is being said to edify or encourage the church.

All the gifts are produced by one and the same Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives gifts to each person, just as He decides. The gifts of the Holy Spirit should not be confused with the fruits of the Spirit discussed in Galatians 5:22-23. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness, self-control. The church collectively and individually should be known for these traits given by the Holy Spirit.
